About the area
We cover the whole valley — Thayne, Alpine, Etna, Freedom, Fairview, Auburn, and Star Valley Ranch — by phone, email, and secure upload.
Star Valley has seen rapid growth as people relocate from Jackson Hole and out of state, bringing new construction, second homes, and higher rebuilding costs. Alpine, at the confluence of the Snake and Greys rivers near Palisades Reservoir, is a gateway for boating, fishing, and Snake River Canyon traffic.
The valley's agricultural roots run deep — Star Valley Swiss cheese and dairies have been part of the area for generations — and ranches still cover much of the valley floor.
Local facts & hazard data
- In March 2017, snowmelt flooded mostly agricultural land along the Salt River near Etna and Crow Creek near Fairview, and some Fairview homeowners sandbagged.
- The Fire Trail, Marten, and Roosevelt fires in 2018 strained firefighting resources near Alpine, and a wildfire coalition formed in 2019. Alpine's wildfire guide notes valley and grassland homes can also be in the ember zone.
- Star Valley Ranch, incorporated in 2005, is a recognized Firewise community.
- Only about 37% of valley residents live inside the four incorporated towns, so most are rural homeowners.
- Lincoln County's avalanche rating is very high, mostly in mountain terrain — highway closures matter to travelers even where homes aren't exposed.
Hazard ratings are county-level figures from FEMA's National Risk Index; climate figures are approximate. Check your own address at FEMA's NRI map.
Local risks we plan for in Star Valley
Rising rebuild costs
New construction and remote building sites can push replacement costs well above what older policies assume. Underinsurance is a real risk in a fast-growing valley.
Heavy snow & avalanche terrain
Deep snow, roof loads, and avalanche-prone canyons — including the Snake River Canyon toward Jackson — affect homes, cabins, and travel.
Wildfire
Many new homes are built against the Bridger-Teton and Caribou-Targhee national forests, in true wildland-urban interface.
Boats & recreation
Palisades Reservoir and the Snake and Salt rivers mean boats, rafts, and fishing gear that need their own coverage.
Earthquake
Western Wyoming lies in the Intermountain Seismic Belt with active faults near the valley. Earthquake damage is excluded from standard home policies.
What it means for your coverage
Wildfire at the edge of town
Defensible space and roof materials are underwriting questions, especially in Alpine and Star Valley Ranch.
Flood
A separate flood policy covers buildings; it does not cover hay, crops, or livestock.
Second homes and recreation
Lincoln County's roughly 16.5% vacancy rate points to many seasonal homes, plus the boats, RVs, and sleds that go with them.
Rural homes and ranches
Most valley homes sit outside town limits, often with acreage, outbuildings, or livestock that need farm & ranch coverage.
Coverage tips for Star Valley
- Have us check your dwelling limit against current local rebuilding costs.
- Second homes and cabins need a seasonal or dwelling policy that matches occupancy.
- Insure boats and trailers separately for coverage on the water and on the road.
- With higher home values, an umbrella policy is an inexpensive layer of liability protection.
Wyoming auto insurance minimums
Wyoming requires at least 25/50/20 liability ($25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident, $20,000 property damage).
Minimums are rarely enough for a serious accident. We'll help you choose limits that protect your home and savings.
